Frequently Asked Questions

Details of this year's Spring Tipping competition are detailed below. If you have any other questions that aren't answered below, we'd be happy to help. Just send us an email on info@springtipping.com.au.

How does the competition work?

The rules are simple; for every Group 1 or Group 2 race in Melbourne between Turnbull Stakes day (October 2nd) and Emirates Stakes day (November 5th) you get two selections. The first selection is a win selection, the second is a place selection.

Your win and place selection must be different. ie. You must select two different horses per race.

You are responsible for checking the scratching of runners. If your selection is scratched, you will see a line through it on the "Your Tips" section in your account page.

Any decision made by Spring Tipping throughout the duration of the competition is final.

Closing date for selections is 12:00 noon AEST on the day of the race.

How do I place my tips on the site?

Once you are registered, go to Your Account which is linked at the top right hand side of the site.

You'll then see a list of the races in this year's Spring Tipping competition. Simply click the green plus icon to add your tips, or the notepad icon to edit your current tips. If any of your selections have a line through them, this means they have been scratched and you need to chenge your selection(s).

You will be able to add tips 3 days prior to the race. For example, for races on Saturdays, fields will be in once we receive them from Racing Information Services Australia at around 1pm on Wednesday.

How do I earn points?

You will accumulate points based on the Sportingbet MaxiDiv odds. Take last year's Melbourne Cup for example which was won by Americain ahead of Maluckyday. Imagine you selected Americain with your win selection and Maluckyday with your place selection.

If Americain's MaxiDiv odds were $10 and Maluckyday was $3.50 for the place, then you would accumulate $13.50 points for this race towards your tally.

What are PowerPlays and TriplePlays?

Each weekend you will have an opportunity to select in PowerPlay and TriplePlay races, which are selected Group 1 events. PowerPlays mean you will receive double points should you select a winner or place getter, so for example if you picked Americain at $10, you'd receive 20 points.

TriplePlays are available for the Melbourne Cup, Caulfield Cup and Cox Plate only - the big three! It's simple, pick a winner or place getter and receive triple points! So if you took Americain at $10, you'd receive 30 points.

What are the prizes?

Prizes come courtesy of our major sponsor Sportingbet Australia. This year we have a fantastic winner's prize on offer which is a VIP trip to Moonee Valley in December including all of the following:

  • Two Corporate hospitality tickets at Moonee Valley to the Sportingbet race night in December
  • Three course meal including free drinks on the Sportingbet table in the Jockey Bar facility at Monee Valley
  • Return airfares from any Australian capital city to Melbourne
  • Five star accommodation for the Friday night
  • Access to the mounting yard before and after the main race on the program
  • Drinks with the owners after the main race
  • Bonus bets of $500 on the race night
  • Transfers to and from the racecourse
  • Transfers to and from the airport

The runner up in the competition will receive a $500 bonus bet from Sportingbet Australia, third place a $250 bonus bet and fourth place a $100 bonus bet. Tipsters finishing from fifth down to tenth will all receive a $50 bonus bet into their Sportingbet Australia account.

Also, each Saturday the tipster with the highest tally for the day will receive $50 bonus into their Sportingbet Australia account. This will be happening every Saturday throughout the entire competition, and also on racedays that are not weekends, where there is only one Group 1 or Group 2 race (Thousand Guineas, Melbourne Cup and Crown Oaks).

In the event that no tipster has a clear lead on a given raceday, no bonus bet will be awarded.

When does the competition begin?

Spring Tipping 2011 will commence on Sunday October 2nd, 2011 (Turnbull Stakes Day). There are nine racedays with a total of 29 races to select from. The competition will end on November 5th (Emirates Stakes Day) with the winner announced that night.

Registration for new tipsters is now closed for 2011.

What races can I tip on?

As noted above, there are 29 races over a total of nine racedays. View all the races, as well as all the PowerPlays and TriplePlays at the Spring Carnival race list page.
